When shopping for a channel letter bending machine, most people start with the price. It makes sense because cost is easy to compare, but it does not tell the whole story. Machines vary widely in what they can produce, so a price comparison alone can mean comparing two different kinds of investment.

The hidden cost: changeover downtime
The purchase price does not account for the time required to switch between jobs. On many premium bending machines, changing from one letter style to another requires mechanical retooling, including swapping dies, changing tools, or making manual adjustments. For a busy shop, that downtime adds up.

Not all “trimless” is equal
The value of the 5AS trimless and reverse capability goes beyond the machine price. Ascent’s extrusion and stainless-fastener system costs less in materials than the premium competitor’s system. It also uses mechanical fasteners instead of relying only on adhesives. Ascent’s construction is cULus certified for indoor and outdoor letters up to 66” tall. The competitor’s guidelines limit outdoor use to 38” unless a structural engineer approves the installation.
The construction method matters when comparing trimless letters. The 5AS makes a front-lit trimless letter with an acrylic face secured in an aluminum extrusion and illuminated like a traditional front-lit channel letter, without the plastic trim cap. Some other trimless styles are edge-lit, with the acrylic face bonded to PVC and illuminated through the side. Both are valid products, but they are different types of letters.
One machine, two trims—or skip trim altogether
Most trim machines are designed only for plastic trim cap. The Ascent TMB-3 handles standard plastic trim and can also form flat aluminum coil to suit a letter. Aluminum trim produced by the TMB-3 costs about 25% less per foot than plastic trim, reducing material costs for shops with steady production volume.
