What 100% Duty Cycle Means

The Ascent handheld fiber laser offers a 100% duty cycle, enabling continuous operation without scheduled cooling breaks. For this model family, the claim applies at the selected model's rated power, within the published ambient range of −20°C to +60°C (−4°F to +140°F), using the integrated dual-circuit refrigerant heat-pump cooling system. Duration is continuous operation rather than a timed on/off cycle. This is a manufacturer performance specification; an independent third-party duty-cycle test protocol is not currently published. Buyers should confirm the exact model, power setting, ambient conditions, and validation requirements for their application.

The advantages of dual wire feeder

Built as a laser welder for sign shops that need to switch between materials fast:

  • Significant gap-closing capacity
  • Capability for multi-layer welding
  • Wide gap-filling capacity (2 x 1.6 mm wire = 2.5–3.0 mm gap-filling capacity)
  • Extremely high welding speeds
  • High deposition rate
  • Usable for both thin and thick materials — an effective laser welder for thin sheet metal as well as heavier gauge
  • Easy to operate
  • Two separate wire feeders, with each wire controlled independently. When not in dual welding mode, both wire feeders can be prepared for different materials (e.g., stainless steel on one and aluminum on the other), allowing for a very short changeover time between materials.

Frequently asked

Common questions about this equipment

What does the price include? Are there hidden fees?
As an aluminum laser welder USA and Canadian sign shops trust, Ascent Equipment's pricing is completely transparent. The quoted price includes everything needed for operation — no add-ons, hidden fees, or extra charges. The only additional cost is freight. Included: laser welder installation and training on-site with comprehensive team instruction; a full 2-year comprehensive parts-and-labor warranty; ongoing software updates at no additional cost; lifetime remote diagnostics and assistance; AnyDesk Remote Desktop Software pre-installed for rapid-response remote assistance and retraining. With technicians strategically located in Buffalo, Toronto, and Kentucky, help is always nearby.
What is your warranty?
Ascent handheld laser welders include a 2-year comprehensive parts-and-labor warranty.
What is unique about the Ascent handheld fiber laser welder compared to others in the industry?
As the best laser welder for channel letters, the Ascent laser welder uses a refrigeration heat pump, enabling continuous operation without scheduled cooling breaks. The laser torch is compact, allowing it to work in a space with a 1.5" stroke, and weighs 1.32 lb (600 g) to reduce operator fatigue. It can handle aluminum thicknesses from 0.040" to 0.27" and features a dual wire feeder for larger gaps. The machine comes as a complete set with a trolley, safety glasses, and a laser helmet.
How about laser safety?
For laser welders, we recommend using special safety glasses or a laser helmet, which we supply with the machines. Use welding gloves, or you can purchase special gloves and an apron that withstand temperatures over 5000 °F. For laser welders, use laser partitions that can be purchased from us or make your own. For the laser cutter, ensure it is purchased with a cover, or use laser partitions available from us, or make your own. For the laser cutter, ventilate fumes to the outside or purchase a special filter.
Can a laser welder also cut metal, or is it welding-only?
The handheld and refrigeration welders can also cut various materials and clean rust or oxidation, but that's a secondary capability, not the machine's main purpose — if you have significant cleaning work, we recommend a dedicated Ascent laser cleaning machine instead. For dedicated cutting, Ascent's fiber laser cutters (including the dual-gantry CO2 + fiber system) are separate machines built specifically for that job.
What's the practical difference between the 1500W, 2000W, and 3000W welder models?
Power determines maximum weld penetration and speed on thicker material — the 1500W model handles up to roughly 7mm stainless steel, the 2000W up to 9mm, and the 3000W up to 12mm, with proportionally deeper penetration on aluminum, carbon steel, and other metals. For most channel letter work in standard-gauge aluminum and stainless steel, the 2000W is sufficient; 3000W is for heavier fabrication. Full penetration tables are on the spec sheet below.
Does the welder need a water chiller, or is it air-cooled?
Neither, in the way those terms are usually used. Ascent's refrigeration welders use a heat-pump cooling system — not a traditional air-cooled fan setup or a water/glycol chiller loop — which allows a 100% duty cycle from −20°C to +60°C without the maintenance a water chiller requires.
What is 'wobble welding' and why does it matter for channel letters?
Wobble welding oscillates the beam in a controlled pattern (independent amplitude and frequency, driven by a high-speed servo) instead of tracing a single straight line. It widens the effective weld bead without slowing the head down, which is why it matters for channel letters specifically: it makes the beam more tolerant of small fit-up gaps and produces a more consistent seam on curved returns.
What shielding gas do I need for laser welding?
Argon is the standard shielding gas for aluminum welding on Ascent handheld and QCW systems; it prevents oxidation at the weld pool during welding.
How long do consumables (nozzles, lenses, wire) last, and what do they cost to replace?
Ascent laser welders ship with a starter set of consumables (nozzles, protection lens, ceramic rings on the cutter side; wire and nozzle tips on the welder side). Consumable life depends on the materials you're running, but replacement parts are inexpensive.
What electrical service do I need to install a laser welder?
It depends on the model: the 2000W unit runs on 220V single-phase at 31A, while the 3000W unit requires 380V three-phase at 17A. Have an electrician confirm your shop's service capacity before installation — full specs are on this page.
Can I weld two different metals together, like steel to aluminum?
Generally, no — dissimilar metals like steel and aluminum have very different melting points and form brittle intermetallic compounds when fused directly, regardless of welding process. That's a metallurgy limitation, not a machine limitation; mechanical fastening (clips, rivets) is the standard approach instead. If you have a specific pair of metals in mind, contact us and we can confirm whether it's weldable for your application.
Can the handheld welder be used outdoors or on a mobile job site, like for mold repair?
Yes — the handheld platform is portable and is exactly what Ascent's mold-repair welder is built on. The refrigeration-cooled models are rated to operate from −20°C to +60°C, which covers most outdoor and on-site repair conditions. For fully mobile or off-grid use, you'll need a 220V generator to power the unit.
How do I maintain a fiber laser welder day-to-day?
Daily maintenance is light: inspect and clean the lens if spatter is present, check wire feed, and confirm the proximity sensor and safety interlocks fire correctly before the first weld. Our laser welding workstation setup guide includes a full daily startup checklist.
Air-cooled vs. Refrigerant-cooled: Choosing the Best Cooling System for Your Laser Welder
For high-power laser welders (1,500 W to 3,000 W) operating continuously, refrigerant cooling is the superior choice. It provides enhanced temperature stability, optimal protection for the laser source and welding head, and ensures a reliable 100% duty cycle for consistent performance.
